As per her wishes, Betty was cremated. Family and friends will gather at the First United Methodist Church in Clarksburg on Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, where a Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 P.M. with Reverend Harry Jenkins presiding. Private Inurnment will follow.

Mary Jane “Betty “Preston Tonkin, 98, formerly of Clarksburg Country Club Rd, passed away peacefully January 20, 2022 at Stonerise Bridgeport.

Betty was born May 19,1923 in Clarksburg, WV. A daughter of the late Albert August and Cleo Francis Bush Rolland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Ashton ”Peck” Preston in 1977 and her second husband, John Barnett “Bud” Tonkin in 2006.

Betty is survived by her son, David Albert Preston, and wife Pamela of Bridgeport; her daughters Sharon Anne Ullom and husband John of Bay Village, Ohio and Layne Rolland Harper and husband Herb of New Orleans, Louisiana; two grandchildren, Jason Raymond Preston and wife Catherine and Meredith Harper Murphy and husband Matt; as well as, step-grandchildren, Jacquelyn Fleece and Holly, Luke and Jeb Tonkin; her great-grandchildren, Julian and Jack Murphy, Cailin Renea Preston and Tobias Xavier Fleece.

Betty was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her only sister, Frances Rolland “Patty” Wells.

She was a graduate of Washington Irving High School and completed both her undergraduate studies and master’s degree at West Virginia University, where she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

During and after WWII Betty was a home service worker for the American Red Cross.

She was a past president, and lifetime member of the Clarksburg League for Service. Betty held membership and was past president of the Women’s Club of Clarksburg, the Auxiliary to the Union Protestant Hospital, twice serving as Holly Ball Chair, and the Women’s Golf Association at Clarksburg Country Club. She was also an active member of the Golf Plaza Garden Club. She was an avid bridge player and a member of the American Contract Bridge League and held a lifetime membership in the WVU Alumni Association.

Betty was an educator for 26 years , believed in volunteerism, and was lifelong member of First United Methodist Church.

The family is extremely grateful to the staff of Stonerise Bridgeport for the very special care they provided to Betty.

As per her wishes, Betty was cremated.
