Stephen Michael Cockrell of Nutter Fort found everlasting peace with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 14, 2025. He was born in Clarksburg on June 5, 1947, the son of the late Charles and Marguerite Duckworth Cockrell. Stephen was a 1966 graduate of Notre Dame High School and served with the Army Reserves for seven years. He was well versed in technical skills and his quest for knowledge in weather, climate and electronics. His ambition for life was to engage himself in many capacities and was a certified scuba diver traveling with teams to many locales. A fan of the Arts, he was involved with Act II performances at Robert C. Byrd High School in stage format, lighting and construction. He was an avid CB operator where he formed many new relationships. He was also known for his bowling skills and was in a league at Compton Bowling Lanes. Steve enjoyed football and attended many WVU games where he always had a favored section of seating with his memorable friend, Charlie Freeman. Steve also enjoyed science-fiction themes and owned several films and collectables. His devotion to community was quite notable serving as a member of the Harrison County EMS for a decade. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nutter Fort. Steve was employed in several occupations. He was in the Banking industry for 15 years. His accomplishments at Infocision garnered him an achievement award in the company for NRA. Remaining focused on life became a challenge when he had a major stroke. In a 14 year period he regained insight and engagement in all activities including work at Bi-county Nutrition for four years and learned to drive again. He was chosen at Fitness 24 as member of the month where he made the best effort he possibly could. For that, we express our gratitude to their staff and owners Ashley and Clinton and a wealth of friends. A sincere thank you to Dr. Dana Bragg, Pastor Don Fowler and everyone who opened a door or said a prayer, as well as our friends Skip and Donna Jo who brought friendship and nourishment to him weekly, as well as neighbor Janet Pritt and our church family. Surviving are his companion, Phyllis Popovich and her family, Greg E. Popovich, Kristy D. Henson, Alexander Bradley-Popovich, Olivia Bradley-Popovich and Cheryl R. Bradley-Popovich. “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint…Isaiah 40:31” Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 am with Pastor Ron Owens officiating.
