Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Sunday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm.   Funerals services will be held Monday, April 11, 2016 at 11:30am with Reverend JJ Roller officiating.   Interment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens where full military rites will be accorded.

Charles E “Poppy” Gouer, 91 of Clarksburg, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Nella’s Nursing Home in Elkins with his loving wife by his side.

He was born on Aug 15, 1924 in Philippi, Barbour County, the third child of the late Hobart and Reba Queen Gouer.

He leaves behind his wife of 64 years Martha E Gouer, whom he married on April 11, 1951.

Surviving are one daughter, daughter Sharon E. Patterson of Clarksburg; and two sons William E. “Bill” Gouer and wife, Teresa of Clarksburg and Mark E. Gouer and wife Cheri of Eustis, Florida.  He was a doting grandfather of four grandchildren Jennifer Lynn Lepley-Calan and her fiancé Joey Tompkins of Chesapeake Beach, MD, Bryan Andrew Lepley and his wife Sara of Aiken, SC, Dawna “Richelle” Squires, Kissimmee FL, and Sara Bethany Snodgrass and her husband Matthew of Clarksburg, from whom he received so much joy.  His great-grandchildren who will love and miss him dearly are Alessandra Nina-Nicole DeLuca, Charles “Charlie” Padrig Callan, Grace Ann Lepley, Ezra William Squires and Isabelle Wren Snodgrass.

He was also preceeded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Mr. Gouer was a 1942 graduate of Philippi High School and attended Salem College and AB College.  He proudly served his country for 30 years during WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam conflict.  He served in the US Navy on the USS Barnes. He spent two of his overseas assignments in Morocco and the Philippines. During his last years in the military he was stationed in the Clarksburg office as a Navy recruiter.  After retiring, he was employed by Stone & Thomas and Sears-Roebuck Company.  He was a former member of Centennial Squares Square Dancers, Stonewall Jackson Coin Club, Roy E. Parish Post #13 American Legion, and Meuse Argonne Post 573 VFW.

Mr. Gouer was a good neighbor that was always there to lend a helping hand when needed. He enjoyed coin collecting and genealogy.  He was friendly, outgoing, never knew a stranger and absolutely loved children and spending time with his family.
