Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Sunday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, where funeral services will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023 at 11:00 am with Pastor Andrew King officiating. Entombment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lewis-Upshur Humane Society, 318 Mud Lick Rd, Buckhannon, WV 26201.

Gerald Edward “Jake” Merriner, 92, of Jane Lew passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

He was born in Hundred, WV on April 24, 1930, a son of the late Robert Lee and Rebecca Taylor Merriner.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Joan C. Plum Merriner, who passed away on January 4, 2019.

Surviving are one son, John Lee Merriner and his wife Penny of Winchester, VA; two daughters, Shelley Jo Matheny and her husband Ron of Clarksburg and Amy Rebecca McKee and her husband Mike of Weston; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and one on the way.; and two siblings, James Merriner and Betty Merriner.  He is also survived by his dearest friends, Curtis Smith, Pat Casey, Arden Lynn Skidmore and Fred Sumpter.  He also leaves behind his sidekick, Gus.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Regina Ann Seamon; one son, Gerald Edward Merriner, II; five brothers, Junior, Ancel, Charles, Wilbur and Harold; and one sister, Virginia Fowler.

Mr. Merriner was an honorably discharged United States Marine veteran having served from 1951 to 1959 during the Korean War.

He was retired from the city of Clarskburg Police Department with 11 ½ years of service, where he received the Medal of Valor for an incident that happened on May 24, 1970 when he and his partner, Steve Toryak, were shot in a robbery on Duff Avenue.

Jake enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved his dog, Gus, but mostly he missed his wife dearly.
