Friends and family may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Sunday, April 10, 2016 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm.  The Vigil Rite will be held at 7:30 pm to conclude the visitation.   A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church, 126 East Pike Street, Clarksburg on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 10:00 am with Father Casey Mahone as celebrant.   Internment will follow in the Bridgeport Cemetery where full military graveside rites will be accorded.

J. Patrick Bower, 82 of Clarksburg, WV passed away at home on April 6, 2016 following a brief illness. Pat was the oldest child of the late James W. and Mary Cecila McAvoy Bower. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on Christmas Day 1933, entering the world at the height of the Great Depression.  Pat graduated from Bluefield High School, Fairmont State College and West Virginia University School of Law. Pat loved the practice of law and recently celebrated his 58th year as an active member of the West Virginia Bar Association.

Pat began his legal career as an attorney in the Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps.  Upon the completion of his military service, Pat served as assistant attorney general for the State of West Virginia.  In 1968 he returned to Clarksburg as city attorney and began a successful law practice, serving a diverse group of clients – some who paid him in home grown vegetables.  In addition to his legal activities, Pat also served as the president of Bel Aire Development Corporation for many years, helping to maintain and operate Riverbend Apartments.

Throughout his life, Pat was involved in civic and community affairs.  He is a past president of the Harrison County Bar Association and served on the board of the Sacred Heart Children’s Home, the Clarksburg Library Board and the Civil Rights Commission.  For 38 years, Pat served as the General Counsel and Secretary/ Treasurer of the Central West Virginia Transit Authority, taking great pride in the organization’s role in providing safe and reliable bus transportation.

Pat was a devoted father and husband. He is remembered for his kindness, wise counsel and generosity. He is survived by his wife Anita, with whom he enjoyed 11 happy years of marriage and three children: Patrick Bower and his wife Diane of Clinton, NJ; Catherine Grewell and her husband Mark of Columbus, Ohio and James Bower and his wife Beverly of Pittsburgh, PA; and two step children, Melinda Puth and her husband Jason of Rochester, NY, and Deborah Kelly and her husband Steve of Mars, PA. Pat was grandfather to nine grandchildren: Conor, Zachary, Gavin, Emily, Kelsey, Kyle, EJ, Isaac and Ryan; and four step grandsons, Brennen and Evan Puth, and Ryan and Scott Kelly.  He is also survived by two brothers, Richard  Bower of Indianapolis, IN and David Bower and his wife Mary of Evansville, IN, and sisters Jacqueline Richards of Salem, VA and Connie Anderson and her husband David of Nutter Fort, WV; and the mother of his children, Marge Bower of Columbus, OH.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Bower.
