Janet “Jan” Emelyn Smith, born March 4, 1931 in Clarksburg, WV, passed away at her brother’s home, with whom she resided, in Lost Creek on Monday, July 11, 2022, at the age of 91. Preceding her in death were her parents Ernest W. and Marjorie Y. Smith and a brother, Joseph E. Smith. Surviving are a brother, Jackson L. Smith and wife Margaret, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Jan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1953 from Bridgewater College of VA and attended WVU Graduate School of Social Work. She began her career as a social worker in Baltimore City and retired as a Regional Specialist from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Her dedication went beyond retirement, serving as a member on the Social Services Board in Botetourt County, VA for several years after.

Along with being a member of various organizations throughout her life, such as Beta Sigma Phi and Troutville Sunshine Girls, Jan always took pride in remaining an active member of Shenandoah Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA. She loved snow skiing and made sure to hit the slopes every chance she got but never missed basketball and football season to cheer on her favorite teams, VA Tech and WVU.

Out of appreciation for the education that led to a successful and fulfilling career, Jan started the “Jan Smith’s Scholarship Fund” for future social workers, at Bridgewater College in VA.

In keeping with her wishes, a cremation memorial service will be held at the Floral Hills Memorial Garden Chapel in Mount Clare, WV (Quiet Dell) on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Linda Muhly officiating.
