Jean Sabatelli, of Clarksburg, WV, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2020, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Betty Jeanne Mongold was born in Granville, WV, on June 17, 1929, the second born daughter of the late Frederick Leroy and Lena Hayes Mongold.

Jean was a graduate of Morgantown High School in 1947. She moved to Clarksburg and attended Clarksburg Business College to learn secretarial skills. While working at a local shoe store, she met her husband, the late Leonard John Sabatelli. They were married on October 21, 1952. Initially, the couple owned and operated Alpha Super Market. Later, Jean assisted her husband in the building of their food wholesale distribution center, Mt. Clare Distribution Center. Jean enjoyed golfing with her husband and a women’s golf league.

Jean dedicated her life to her husband and family as a wife, mother, and homemaker. She was amazing in the kitchen, a self-taught culinary expert in many areas preparing French and Italian cuisines including the local tradition of canning giardiniera. Jean was later known for catering parties and various gatherings. A visit to her home included coffee, pastry, and a meal marked by humorous storytelling. She loved gardening, especially tending to roses. Jean was passionate about reading traveling the world through books. She also loved to discuss her readings essentially creating an impromptu book club with whomever she engaged.

Jean will be missed by those who loved her, affectionately calling her “Nunnie”, as she requested. She was Catholic by faith and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Nunnie is survived by her four children: Suzanne Bellotte of Bridgeport, Dr. Monica Iaquinta and husband Francis Iaquinta of Bridgeport, Dr. Frank Sabatelli, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Theresa Hill and husband Rick Hill of Fairmont. She had eight grandchildren including John Paul Aliveto and wife Dr. Jamie Aliveto, Samuel Iaquinta and wife Alexandra Iaquinta, Dr. Brittni McLaughlin and husband, Dr. Aaron McLaughlin, Leonard Curotz, Nicole Elwell and husband Bill Elwell, Darrian Hill, Maddie Hill, and Drew Hill. She also had six great-grandchildren including Seth Aliveto, Sophia Aliveto, Jordan Curotz, Alexandra Macatee, Lucas McLaughlin, and Lilliana Rose Iaquinta.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by an infant grandchild, Amy Curotz, sister, Norma Lambert, and stepfather, Willard W. Cochran.

In keeping with her wishes, Jean will be cremated. A private family service will be held on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Clarksburg Mission in Jean’s memory.

The family expresses gratitude to Harrison County Senior Citizens Center and West Virginia Hospice of Buckhannon for their loving care and support.
