Family and friends may call at the Midway Apostolic Church, England Run Road, Philippi on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm and also at Amos Carvelli Funeral Home on Friday, January 20, 2017 from 9:00 until the service hour which will be 11:00 am with Reverend Daniel Garlitz officiating.   Interment will be in the Stonewall Park Cemetery.

Pastor George C. Cross, Sr., 72, of Stonewood, passed away surrounded with family and loved ones on Monday, January 16, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Clarksburg on June 3, 1944, a son of the late Arden and Lula Stull Cross.

 

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Claypool Cross, whom he married August 5, 1966; six children, George Cross, Jr. and his late companion Dallas Chess of Dola, Kenneth E. Cross and his companion Becky of Stonewood, Kevin D. Cross and his wife Robyn of Stonewood, Brian W. Cross and his wife Angie of North View, Dawn D. Sprouse and her husband Greg of Stonewood, and Billy J. Cross Rucker and his wife Faith of Fayetteville, NC; nine grandchildren, Kevin Cross, II and his wife Jessie, Kayla Thomas and her husband Garrett, Zachary Queen and his companion Heather, Nathan Sprouse and his wife Briana, Chase Cross and his wife Kaleigh, Alex Cross, Noah Cross, Casey Cross and Billy Joe Cross, II; four step-grandchildren, Donald Claypool II and his wife Stephanie, Elijah Hines, Zechariah Hines, and Jeremiah King; seven great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; one brother, Reverend Charles Cross and his wife Shirley; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, Kenneth Cross, Eugene Cross, Robert Cross, John Cross, Ed Cross, Leoma Woodward, Lovie Richards and Rosalie Meadows.

 

George formerly worked at the McNickel Martin China Company, Wilson Bakery, Adamston Flat Glass and the department of highways. He was well known as a brick and block mason, having also taught his oldest son George II.

 

Above all, George loved God, his family and his church. He was called to the ministry in 1973, and founded the Philippi United Pentecostal Church in 1989.  In 1992 the name was changed to the Midway Apostolic Church where he remained pastor there until his death.  George held various ministries within the church, and he also loved hunting with his best buddy Donald Richards.
