Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the funeral service will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Ron Johnson presiding. Interment will follow in the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.

Walter Jackson “Jack” Southern, 97, of Lumberport, WV, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at his residence.

He was born in Saltwell, WV, on May 16, 1928, a son of the late James and Lettie Seckman Southern.

He was preceded in death by his wife C. Ruth Sines Southern.

Mr. Southern is survived by three sons, Porter Southern and his wife Mary of Lumberport, David Southern and his wife Sue of Orcutt, CA, and Jerry Southern and his wife Sheryl of Mannington. He was papaw to eight grandchildren, Kelly Southern, Adam Southern, Chad Southern, Christoher Southern, Jeff Southern, Keith Southern, Philip Amos, and Jennifer Daggs; nine great grandchildren, Ashley Kincaid, Chrissy Bongiorno, Dakota Canter, Sierra White, Dru Bradley, Malaki Southern, Jewel Southern, Logan Southern and Amelia Southern; and seven great great grandchildren, Keelie Kincaid, Zuriah Kincaid, Beckett VanCott, An Bongiorno, Ellie Bongiorno, Clint Canter, and Amos White. He also leaves behind a bonus son, Randy Amos and his wife Jeannine of Clarksburg.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Margie Hooley and her husband Jim, his six siblings, Arthur Southern, Robert Southern, Perry Southern, Bill Southern, Katherine Haulicosky, and Ruth Athey.

Jack retired from Consolidated Coal after 30 years of service and was awarded the oldest living coal miner from Owings Mines in 2025. He was an avid motorcyclist starting at an early age and continued riding Honda Goldwing’s in his later years. He also enjoyed racing go-carts in Fairmont. Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.
