Hartzell, Walter “Bud” Hartzell, Robert “Slats” Hartzell, and Russell “Nook” Hartzell; his sister, Jean Hartzell Hawkins; sisters-in-law, Nelma Bright Hartzell, Judy Hartzell and Betty Hartzell; nephews, John C. Carl served our country for four years as a veteran in the U. S. Navy serving on the USS Snowden and USS Richard E Kraus. During the mid 70’s he was the owner of Hartzell TV Sales and Service. He formerly worked for PPG Industries with 20 years of service as a glass cutter, AFG Industries with 20 years of Service, retiring as a box shop supervisor, and Food Lion with 10 plus years. He also served as Fire Chief with the Nutter Fort Volunteer Fire Department in the 70’s.
He was a member of Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church in Nutter Fort and was a member of the Hermon Lodge #6 AF & AM Masonic Lodge, Clarksburg.
How do you sum up a lifetime of an individual in a few paragraphs?
Carl was not a man of many words, however, he showed his true love of life through his actions, generosity and as a protector of his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and brother, but his favorite title was papaw.
Though his retirement from AFG was part of restructuring along with his “Dirty Dozen” retirees, he found it a blessing as it allowed him to enjoy his many passions.
He loved feeding and watching birds and squirrels. You could always find him outside with his flowers and numerous plants, or in his garage or basement working on his wood projects and trains, or watching his favorite TV shows with his family.
Throughout his time on earth, his passion of woodworking and glass cutting/making can be found around the world.
Some of his work and knowledge is featured at The Museum of American Glass in Weston, WV
He spent time in the great outdoors at Fish Creek in Cameron with his brothers and their families. He also spent time fishing at Teter Creek Lake with his Mother and Father In Law along with his children and grandchildren and at Buffalo lake.
He frequently attended the “breakfast club” with local Classic Car members of the area and helped recreate original wood decor in classic automobiles.
He enjoyed cooking and baking with his grandkids, sharing his recipes through patiently teaching others and loved sending his raisin cakes to his sisters.
His favorite store was Sandy’s Hardware which supplied him with many supplies for his projects and home repairs. It was always a treat for him to take one of the grandkids for a ride in his infamous blue pickup truck.
He left a legacy for his grandchildren with Cedar Chests he made with wormy chestnut and oak, along with countless wooden toys and treasured items. Although he never found school to be much for himself, he always stressed to his grandchildren how important their education is and was proud of their academic and athletic achievements.
Carl loved sharing his appreciation by giving hospital staff, caregivers, and kids the reindeers he made from his workshop. Special thanks from the family to WVU Medicine Medical Hospice for their care in the last weeks of his life.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Carl can make a donation to the Nutter Fort Fire Department/EMS or the Vincent Memorial Methodist Church, 401 Indiana Avenue Nutter Fort WV.
