Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, WV on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.   The funeral service will be held at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home on Friday at 1:00 p.m. to conclude visitation with Reverend Tom Horne presiding.   Interment will follow at the Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery.

Ernest Bates, Jr, 92, of Stonewood passed away on Wednesday, September 06, 2017 at the Louis A. Johnson Medical Center in Clarksburg.

 

He was born in Clarksburg, WV on July 28, 1925, a son of the late Ernest Bates, Sr. and Lula Allen Bates.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Hazel Bullough Bates on January 7, 2017. His first wife, Mary Martha Shook resides in Parkersburg, WV.

 

He is survived by daughter Nancy Sue Bond and husband James of Parkersburg, WV; step-daughter Carol Hardman and husband Ed of Clarksburg, WV; step-son Mike Bullough and wife Terry of Bridgeport, WV; seven grandchildren Toy Hardman, Ralph Hardman II, LeeAnn Wiles and husband Timothy, Dwight Bullough and wife Kiesha, Sarah Cecil and husband Edwin, Laura Cochran and husband Brian, Eric Earnest and wife Melissa; ten great grandchildren Nikki, Amber and Rece Hardman, Molly and Mallory Wiles, Dylan Cecil, Claire and Andrew Cochran, Morgan and Mackenzie Slavensky; three great grandchildren Justyce Corley, Peyton and Sammy Mazza; three half-sisters, Parthena Bates Mathewson of Lima, OH, Ranie Bates Cline of Lima, OH and Ernestine Hayes and husband Bill of Charles Town, WV; three half-brothers Billy Bates of Homosassa, FL, Orville Bates and wife Mary of Ottawa, OH and Franklin Bates and wife Cindy of Lima, OH along with several nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three sisters Francis Eugene “Jean” Bates Frazier, Betty Pearl Bates Blickenhstaff and Anna Louise Bates Loudin; two brothers Cecil Kermit Bates and Lawrence Bates and half-sister, Amy Jean Bates Broughton.

 

He was retired from Consolidated Gas with 38 ½ years’ service and proudly served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943-1946 in England, France, Germany and Belgium. He served at the Battle of the Bulge where he suffered frostbite on his feet and was sent to England to recover and then sent back to active duty following the war. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Clarksburg, WV and attended the Life Way Bible Fellowship Church.

 

Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, WV on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home on Friday at 1:00 p.m. to conclude visitation with Reverend Tom Horne presiding.

 

Interment will follow at the Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
