Obituaries

George Alastanos, 96, of Clarksburg passed away peacefully on Friday, May 20, 2016.  He was born in Clarksburg on December 1, 1919, a son of the late Michael and Despina Georgaroudis Alastanos.

He is survived by his wife, Olga Serafim Alastanos, whom he married April 28, 1957 in Chios, Greece; two sons, Michael George Alastanos and his wife Rebecca of Bridgeport, and John George Alastanos of Bridgeport; four Grandchildren, Tiffany Ann, Jennifer Nicole, Alexis Marie and Matthew George Alastanos; two brothers, Angelo Alastanos of Clarksburg, and Gus Alastanos and his wife Judy of Nutter Fort; two sisters, Mary D’Onofrio of Baltimore, MD, and Catherine Lopez of Clarksburg; one sister-in-law, Sofia Alastanos of Clarksburg; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, John and Steve Alastanos and an infant brother; and two sisters, Anna Fanady and an infant sister.

George was a United States Army veteran having served in the 220^th Armored Engineering Battalion during WWII from June 1942 through December 1945, where he received a Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Ribbon.  He retired from Fourco Glass at Jerry Run with 30 years of service.  He was also a member of the Meuse Argonne Post #573 VFW, Roy E. Parrish Post 13 American Legion, and was a past parish council member and past president for the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church where he was a lifetime member.

George was an avid gardener who took much pride in raising various vegetables.  He was particularly proud of the tomatoes he raised. George enjoyed sitting under his pine tree on the hill in Summit Park, and watching his grandchildren in their school sporting events.  He will be sadly missed as a husband, dad, Papou, brother and friend.

Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street on Monday from 2:00 to 8:00 pm, where a Trisagion Service will be held at 7:00pm.  Mr. Alastanos will be taken to the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church to lie in state for one hour prior to the service which will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 11:00 am with Father John Kostas as Celebrant.  Interment will be in the Elkview Masonic Cemetery, where full military graveside rites will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, P. O. Box 4176, Clarksburg, WV 26301.
