Tall Paul Gene Lister, 95, oldest man in Nutter Fort, WV, passed away on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, at his residence, following a brief illness.
He was born in Nutter Fort on March 20, 1930, a son of the late Roy Bond and Ella Nicholson Lister.
After graduating Paul joined the State Guard which later turned into the National Guard. Then he enlisted and just after Navy boot camp, March 4, 1952, Paul married Lyda Ann Harrison of Lost Creek, the love of his life, celebrating 73 years of marriage. He served for 4 years in the US Navy Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He then rejoined the Army National Guard, serving a total of 41 years in the military. He retired as Sergeant Major. All 6 of his children later served their country in various branches.
He is survived by four sons; Paul Gene Lister and wife Xenia of Syracuse, NY, James Vaughn Lister of Clarksburg, John Harrison Lister and wife Brenda of Austin, TX, and Duane Oliver Lister and wife Bethany of Bridgeport; one daughter, Sheree Lea Rosevear of Silver City, NV; 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Dusty Cameron Lister. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by his brother, Roy Lister, Jr. and his sister, Shirley Posey.
Paul was a graduate of Roosevelt Wilson High School, Class of 1948 and went on to graduate cum laude from Salem College. His illustrious careers included: National Treasurer of the Young Democrats of America, offices in the union at PPG, WV House of Delegates 1969-1970, Assistant to A. James Manchin, Advance Man for Governor Caperton, Sgt for the Moose Drill Team, NF Volunteer Fire Dept, on assignment to the NF Police Dept, NF Lions Club, and Various service organizations to name a few. He retired from the WV Dept of Highways as an investigator at the age of 81.
Mr. Lister was a great WV historian and a playwright, “Lincoln’s Walk at Midnight”. He and Lyda were members of the Rock and Gem Club, traveling and making jewelry from their finds. He enjoyed golfing, craps, gardening, and was a world traveler.
Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Sunday from 2:00 to 7:00 pm, where funeral services will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025 at 12:00 pm with Reverend Sam Cale presiding. Interment will be follow in the WV National Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded.
A dinner will follow at the Vincent Memorial Methodist Church in Nutter Fort.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Paul’s name are suggested for either Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church or to the American Legion Post 68 for the National Wreaths Across America Program.
