Gary Nelson Mitchell, 76, of West Union, formerly of Stonewood, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at River Oaks Nursing Facility in Clarksburg.

He was born on April 19, 1950, a son of the late Nelson Blair Mitchell and the late Mary F. Hamrick Cunningham.

Gary is survived by one brother David L. Mitchell and wife Carla of West Union, one sister, Debra Houlison and husband Ian of Morgantown; two nephews David “Chris” Mitchell, George Case and two nieces Kayla Dilcher, and Elena Schor.

Gary graduated from Braxton County High School and worked various part-time jobs throughout his life. He attended Community of Christ Church in Doddridge County and First Presbyterian Church in Clarksburg.

Gary lovingly cared for his mother during the last few years of her life. He cherished the neighbors in the Stonewood community and was deeply appreciative of all they did for him. Gary never met a stranger and could carry on a conversation with anyone, at any time. Joking and teasing were among his specialties, and his sense of humor brought smiles to those around him.

Gary loved food, especially candy and various breads, with Hershey’s being one of his favorites. He especially enjoyed his sister-in-law’s “Cherry Delight.” Above all, Gary treasured spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held in the Orlando Cemetery in Lewis County on Monday at 1:00 P.M.
