Walter Raymond Gettings, 79, of Clarksburg, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Walter was born on October 7, 1944, in Anmoore, WV, a son of the late John Thomas and Frankie Lea Morrison Gettings.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cynthia Marie Jeffries Gettings, who he married on August 21, 1965, by Reverend Strait at his residence. After their ceremony, they had cherry pie and then went to his backyard and shot the shotgun.
He is also survived by his three daughters, Tammy Renee Gettings of Clarksburg, WV, Rebecca Lynn Gettings Stutler and her husband Eugene of Lost Creek, WV, and Lorrie Marie Gettings-Powell Henderson and husband Ron of Salem, WV; his three sons, Walter Raymond Gettings II and his wife Tonda of Noblesville, IN, Jason Alan Gettings and companion Pamela of IN, and Tommy Jo Gettings and his wife April of Jane Lew, WV; 17 grandchildren, Sam, Cinda, Brittney, Jen, Samantha, Jess IV, Kristin, Katie, Brianna, Jacob, Sierra, Miranda, Kiley, Wayne, Stacy, Selena and Alex; 16 great grandchildren, Charlee, Ellis J, Audra, Caylee, Addi, Charlotte, Kyan, Kyler, Addisyn, Jess V, Gabriel, Landon, Lincoln, Lance, June, Samuel, and one grandson on the way; one very special nephew, Robert Lee Gettings and daughter-in-law, Kimberly Michelle Maddox-Gettings.
He also leaves behind two sisters, Patricia Jeffries and her husband Cliff of Cicero, IN, and Debra Reasons of California; two brothers, Randall Joe Gettings of Arizona and Gregory Allen Gettings and his wife Lorna of Shandon, CA; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jess Powell III; six brothers and two sisters.
Walter was a carpenter by trade from which he retired. Those who knew him knew he was anti-social, but those who knew him well will remember his love for a “cold beverage” and his ability to laugh. He could crack you up with a sentence that would keep you belly laughing until your stomach ached. He adored his children and enjoyed making his grandchildren roll with laughter from making silly faces. He will be terribly missed by them.
Walters’s most treasured relationship was with his wife, Cynthia. He never allowed disrespect for her by their children or a stranger, and she will miss him greatly.
Walter was never one for sentiment or religiosity, but he made one last gesture before death that made his family exuberant. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized with his family gathered around, and they are assured that he is home in his final resting place.
