Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.   The service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Nutter Fort, 219 Maryland Avenue, Nutter Fort, on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Don Fowler presiding.  Mrs. Hannigan will lie in state one hour prior to the service.   Interment will follow in the Stonewall Park Cemetery.

Gertrude Hannigan, 95, of Nutter Fort, WV, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018, at River Oaks Nursing Home following an extended illness.

 

She was born in Glen Falls, WV, on May 14, 1923, a daughter of the late Fred and Ada Tomblin Holt.

 

Her husband, Leonard W. Hannigan, preceded her in death in March of 1986. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, and two sisters.

 

She is survived by one son, Lenny Hannigan and wife Julie of Clarksburg; two daughters, Maureen “Cookie” Davisson and husband Denzil of Reedsville, WV, and Sherri Lunsford and husband Jim of Boynton Beach FL; seven grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

 

Gertrude was a graduate of Victory High School, Class of 1941, and retired in 2002 from Elder-Beerman as a sales clerk.

 

She was a 60-year member of the First Baptist Church of Nutter Fort where she had been the Bible School Director and head of the children’s department.  She taught Sunday School for over 50 years.   She was a member of the American Baptist Women’s Society, and the Lady Bugs CEOS. She represented the Harrison County Homemakers as their Belle, and served as president of the R.W. Band parents. Gertrude was an avid reader and the family scrabble champion.

 

She was very proud of the fact that during WWII, she was a C & P Telephone Operator and placed several of the first calls to the veteran’s family after the soldiers first got home.
