I have had the honor and privilege of knowing Gertie Hannigan all of my life. She is a true child of God. She lived her faith in Jesus Christ by words, actions, and deeds. She has left rich deposits in the lives of everyone who knew her. She truly exemplified what it means to be a Christian. Gertie had a way of loving people that is so uncommon. She must have spent countless hours, not only at Sunday School and Church, but in preparation for her teaching children, as evidenced by her wonderful way of sharing her Bible knowledge. With or without a flannel board, Gertie would keep us mesmerized with Bible stories. I remember many Vacation Bible Schools at the Nutter Fort Baptist Church, coordinated by Gertie. Many years there were over 200 children who attended, and many came to know Christ. Every Bible School would end by a huge program on Friday night, and the old Church building would be filled and overflowing! I also remember Christmas plays, children's'choir, outings, and picnics. On a more personal level, being friends with Lenny allowed me time at their home. Sometimes I was invited to spend the night, and on many occasions I enjoyed Gertie's wonderful cooking! Until the very end, Gertie was still demonstrating her love for our Lord by attending the Church Services at River Oaks Nursing Home. Gertie beamed as we would sing the great hymns of faith and listen to the lessons and sermons. In closing, I could never say enough nice things about Gertie Hannigan. I know she is in Heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Gertie is one in a million! In Love, John Carter
