I was honored to be Joe's escort officer and liaison to his family upon his return to the US in March of 1973. This also enabled me to help arrange his and Donna's wedding shortly thereafter. Happily, we reconnected in July 2019 after 46 years. So sad for me to just recently learn of his passing. All my best to Donna and Joe's family. Your story is forever engraved in my memory.

I wore Joe's name on my POW/MIA bracelet when I was in college in the early 70's and remember when I was notified that he'd returned home as part of Operation Homecoming in 1973; we got a blue star sticker to attach to the bracelet to signify his safe return. I'll always treasure that bracelet and found it among some other belongings today and wondered about his life since. I'm saddened to read of his passing but what a testament to a life lived beyond his confinement and receiving a Bronze Star. Blessings to his family and fond memories to sustain them. His birthday is our wedding anniversary day, so this year we celebrate his day as we celebrate our 34th anniversary. Serendipity, yes!

I remember Joe very well -- I was a reporter at the Dominion-Post at the time he was released, and interviewed both Donna and Joe at Valley Forge Hospital and when he returned home, and wrote a series of articles about him. Joe was one of my heroes and I'm sorry to hear he's gone.

So sorry for your loss. I'm forever grateful for his impact on us little guys as our Jr. High Sunday School teacher, having the youth group over to your home, and stories around the campfire on youth group trips. Thankful for a life well lived and an impact made. May God give much grace as you grieve, but not without hope.

Donna, I am so sorry to hear of your husband’s passing. I remember the well deserved recognition he received back in the day. Also you telling me of your trips to Nemacolin. Sending you hugs and love. Linda and Tom Leonette
