Family and Friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Monday, September 12, 2016 from 2-8 p.m.   The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 12:00 Noon with Reverend Joseph Palmer, Jr. presiding.   Interment will follow in the Coplin Cemetery where full military graveside rites will be accorded.

Alan Wayne Layman, 70, of Salem, WV, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at his residence.

 

He was born September 6, 1946, in Fairmont, WV, a son of the late Albert Wayne Layman and Evelyn H. (Cain) Layman.

 

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue (Palmer) Layman whom he married November 8, 1968.

 

Also surviving are two sons, Christopher Layman and wife Bobby-Jo of Lost Creek, WV, and Chad Layman and wife Elizabeth of Salem, WV; six grandchildren, Shane, Tyler, and Caje Layman of Salem; Kaitlyn, Eian and Brooke Layman of Lost Creek.

 

Alan is also survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Alan Haught of Lost Creek; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Anauo of Florida; brother-in-law, Daniel Emerson of Clarksburg; brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Linda Palmer of Fairmont, and Randy Palmer of NC; as well as several dear cousins, nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, Stanley Layman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Rebecca Taylor.

 

Alan graduated from Hundred High School in 1964. After graduation he joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he served from 1964 until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1967. While in the service he was stationed with the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam where he took part in Operation Starlite (August 18-24, 1965), the first large-scale US ground operation in Vietnam. He received the Vietnam Service Medal; Rep. of Vietnam Campaign Medal; National Defense Service Medal; and Good Conduct Medal.

 

After his return from the service he started his apprenticeship with the U.A. Local 152 Plumbers and Pipefitters in Morgantown, WV. Over the years he was employed by several companies including Stuart-McMunn and Michel, Inc. Alan retired from active service in 2006 and celebrated 48 years in the Local in 2016.

 

Alan was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed doing woodworking and made several pieces of furniture and many birdhouses. He was a trustee for many years for the Coplin Cemetery.

 

Alan was a member and former deacon at the Centerbranch Assembly of God (formerly Faith Fellowship) and was a faithful believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
