Jewell V. West, 94, of Clarksburg, departed this life and went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 in the United Hospital Center.  She was born on May 23, 1922, a daughter of the late Howard and Willa Julia Middleton Snider.

After attending Doddridge County Schools, she met and married Deward Corwin West on June 5, 1940, who preceded her in death in December, 2000.  Mrs. West was also preceded in death by one son, Richard L. West; one son-in-law, William Matthey.

She is survived by one son, James D. West of Clarksburg; and one daughter, Nancy West Matthey of Clarksburg.  Also surviving are two granddaughters, Lorie Doll and her husband Roger of West Union, and Joy Marple and her husband Oran of Wolf Summit; three great grandchildren, Nathan Doll of West Union, and Emily and Trey Marple of Wolf Summit; her sister, Nancy McElwane of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. West was also preceded in death by four sisters, Flora Marie Fitzpatrick, Tina Maxon, Edith Hinkle, and Emma Dennison; and two brothers, Howard and Frank Snider.

Mrs. West attended the Big Isaac Church of 50 years, where she sang in the church choir.  She raised all three of her children in that church, while at the same time teaching Sunday school.

In 1938-39 the girls of Big Isaac formed a softball team known as “The Big Isaac Girls Team”.  The team was managed by Opal Kelley, where Jewell played second base and they traveled all over the country.  Winning along the way, several ribbons were won at Jackon’s Mill.  A picture of Jewell’s “Big Isaac Girls Team” was later featured in the Clarksburg Exponent Telegram.

In 1948, she went to work at the Salem Glass Factory in Salem, WV.  Later she began making and selling quilts.  Mr. and Mrs. West moved to Laurel Park in 1966, and Mr. West started working at the Veterans Administration Hospital, now known at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center.

Following their love of Christian music, Jewell and Corwin formed a quartet with the Corder’s, singing praise at churches or wherever they were asked, for which they never accepted money.  God always provided their way, singing all over the country and traveling numerous miles.  The West’s and Corder’s sang as a quartet for approximately 15 years.

Although they attended different churches, in 1986 they found their home church at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Adamston.  In addition, Jewell was a member of the Adamston Ivy Rebakah Lodge #112 and the Harrison County Senior Citizens as well at the West Milford Satellite.

Jewell was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  Those who knew her knew that she was a good neighbor, never met a stranger, and loved to talk with people.
