Robert L. Butcher, 82, of Belington, West Virginia, returned to eternal peace on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on April 23, 1943, in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, Robert was the cherished son of the late General Lee and Claudia Lough Butcher. Beloved grandson of the late Claude and Alma Lough; and Edward and Emma Butcher.
He lived a life marked by bravery, commitment, and devotion to those he loved. Robert proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart for his courage in the face of adversity. After his military service, he continued his commitment to veterans by working in the maintenance department at the Veteran’s Hospital in Long Beach, California. As a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the Disabled American Veterans, Robert dedicated his life to supporting his fellow servicemen and women.
His three loving children survive him: Robin Butcher-Patrick of Illinois, Robert Butcher II of Illinois, and Christopher Myers of Bridgeport; two beloved grandchildren, Eric and Brittany; 3 Great-Grandchildren and his beloved sister, Terry Shingleton (Brad) of Salem; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his E. R. C. C. extended family.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, Robert was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Butcher; grandson, Shayne Butcher; and brother, Steven Butcher. Their memories remain a part of his legacy and will continue to inspire his family.
In keeping with his wishes, Robert will be cremated. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at the West Virginia National Cemetery, 42 Veterans Memorial Lane, Grafton, at a later date.
