Muriel “Jean” Dudley Murphy, 102, of Bridgeport, WV passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at her residence.

Born on April 7, 1921 near Bridgeport (Cartwright Mines), Harrison County, WV, Jean was the only child of the late James Dudley and Charlette Mae Randall.

She married Ralph J. Murphy in Harrison County, WV on March 29, 1942, a union that lasted 56 years before his death in 1998.

She was a graduate of Roosevelt Wilson High School and worked as a bookkeeper for Palace Furniture in Clarksburg for 45 years. She and Ralph traveled all over the United States, visiting family and many national parks. She was proud to say she had visited all 50 states. A member since January 26, 1936, Jean attended Vincent Memorial United Methodist Church in Nutter Fort, where she was a member of the Vincent Memorial Women of Faith, which was previously called the Judith Esther Circle. She was also a part of the Grandparent Program and was still in contact with some of the children from the church. Jean and her husband became members of the Stonewall Jackson Coin Club for many years, where Jean was awarded for her outstanding service as club secretary. Many friendships were formed during those years. Because of their travels and interest in local events, many of the photos taken were used by groups for historical value. Some of those appeared in the 100th Anniversary Booklet for the Town of Nutter Fort, WV. A kind and caring person, Jean was a special person to the neighbors around her and as such became a surrogate grandmother to many children who now visited her with their own children.

Surviving are her cousin, Ann Hartzell and husband Carl of Nutter Fort and their children, Carletta “Carrie” McKenna and husband Bill and their daughter, Cianna, and David Hartzell and wife Christa and their children, Abriann and Lilliann; cousins, Barbara Parker, Michael Murphy, Gary Murphy, David Murphy, Patricia Murphy, Howard Murphy, Tim Murphy, Kathy Kay, Mary Colleen Wampler, Charles Murphy and Patrick Murphy; as well as many other family members.

Special thanks to Jennifer Geiger from Visiting Angels, and special caregivers, Alexis Cox and Pat Contreras .

In keeping with her wishes, Jean will be cremated.
