Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Sunday from 12:00 to 8:00 pm. Mr. McDaniel will be taken to the West Milford United Methodist Church to lie in state for one hour prior to the service, which will be held on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 11:00 am with Reverend Tim Kelley and Pastor Jim Hurst officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Gene Arthur “Shorty” McDaniel, 82, of West Milford, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Valley Fork, WV on December 23, 1933, a son of the late William Hunter and Della May Kershner McDaniel.
He is survived by Diane Roupe McDaniel, a constant companion and faithful caregiver. They were married in 1959 and together they had three daughters, Christa Stevens and her husband Steve of Martinsburg, Becky Haddix and her husband Dewayne of Morgantown, and Deborah “GG” Buterbaugh and her husband Jeff of Bruceton Mills. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Megan Carey, Jacob Stout, Adam Stout, Abigail Haddix, Madison Haddix and Lauren Purkey; four sisters, Nancy Fidler and her husband Joe of Buffalo Lake, Willa May Weekley and her husband Gene of Huntington, Sue Ann Corder and her husband Lee of Ravenswood, and Mary Jo Moore and her husband David of Ravenswood; and several special nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles McDaniel and James “Peg” McDaniel; and one sister-in-law, Carolyn Jo McDaniel.
Mr. McDaniel was a United States Marine Veteran. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Salem College, a Masters degree in Biology and a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology, both from WVU. Gene was retired from the Harrison County Board of Education, teaching for over 30 years. He taught in various schools throughout the county, but spent the majority of his career teaching at South Harrison High School. He taught Biology, Physical Science, Botany, Zoology and Physical Education. In addition, he was assistant football coach, head men’s basketball coach, and golf coach throughout his career. The kids lovingly called him “Coach Mac”. Gene went on to serve as the athletic trainer for the varsity football team for many years, and continued to substitute teach throughout the county into retirement. Gene was also a member of the Bel Meadows Country Club and an avid golfer. One of the highlights of his life was his annual beach trip to Myrtle Beach with his family!
