Reverend David L. Meadows, age 82, passed away on, Tuesday, May 15, 2018, in Clarksburg, WV.

 

He was a native of Raleigh County, born at Mead, WV, on January 13, 1936, the son of the late James O. and Annie Marie Cooper Meadows, Sr. and the husband of the late Marilyn M. Wilson Meadows, to whom he was married for fifty years.

 

Also preceding him in death are five brothers, James O. Jr., Ezra, Willie Kenneth, Robert (Bob), and Tracy Glenn, (Denny); four sisters, Eva Danese Miller, Geneva Smith Jackson, Christine Mei Bickford and Marjorie Wills Kent.

 

Surviving are his wife, Zelphia Godfrey Meadows, Clarksburg, WV; a daughter, Sandra E. Cobb and husband Mark of Bridgeport, WV; a stepdaughter, Amy Nestor and her husband Neil of Clarksburg, a stepson, David Charles Bunnell and his wife Michelle of Youngsville, NC, two grandchildren, Kelli Marie Robinson of West Milford, WV, and Jonathan T. Gregg and wife Paige of Benson, NC; five step grandchildren, Nick Nestor, Darron Nestor, Morgan Walters, Hannah Stewart, Ryan Cobb, and their families; four great grandsons, Jaren David Robinson and Brevan Michael Robinson of West Milford, WV, Jaxon Travis Gregg and Dylan Lee Gregg of Benson, NC, one great granddaughter, Olivia Madeline Gregg of Benson, NC; one sister, Shirley June Ellison and her husband Owen D. of Hubert, NC and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

David was a 1953 graduate of Stoco High School. Having graduated with honors, his formal education was mostly obtained by self-education with home study courses from various sources. His Bible and ministry training came through attending several Bible Institutes and life experiences. He did a lot of studies at libraries in several fields. He was fascinated in studying law, but he had a strong revelation that he was called to be a minister. He became a minister in the Church of God and was first credentialed in 1957. He became an Ordained Bishop in 1965. He served for several years as a pastor, organizing his first church at Iroquois, WV, and then moving on to Marfrance, Switzer, Verdunville, Mill Creek, Petersburg, Clarksburg and Parkersburg 19th Street, all in West Virginia. He served as a State Overseer for 14 years as a State Youth Director and State Evangelism Director for 8 years. He conducted revivals as an evangelist in West Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Alabama and North Carolina. He ministered in state meetings (Camp Meeting, Youth Camps, Prayer Conferences and Seminars) in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina and Kentucky. During his ministry he preached more than 5,900 sermons with more than 2,800 conversions, 796 sanctified, 8936 baptized with the Holy Ghost, 681 baptized in water, and 1,084 members added to the church. He organized 28 churches and assisted in establishing an additional 17 new churches. He was a member of the Rhodell Church of God in Raleigh County, WV.

 

During his ministry he served on the State Youth and Christian Education Board and State Council in West Virginia. Internationally, he served on the Youth and Christian Education Board, and the Editorial and Publications Board. He also served as the Vice-Chairman of the North Carolina Home for Children’s Board and served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the East Coast Bible College, Charlotte, NC. He served on several ad-hoc committees, all in the Church of God. He also served on ministerial associations, and as chaplain for fire departments, police departments and in several hospitals.

 

He was appointed as the State Youth and Christian Education Director for West Virginia in 1976. He served in the same capacity for the State of Virginia in 1980-81 and returned to West Virginia in 1981 to serve as the State Evangelism and Home Mission Director; all in the Church of God Denomination. In 1984 he was appointed as the Regional Overseer for the Northern New England States of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He also served as State Overseer in Missouri, Eastern North Carolina, and Kentucky. His pastoral years totaled 23 years and his administrative years totaled 22. He retired from appointment in May, 2001 and returned to Beckley, West Virginia. He moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia July 2006 where he has lived since. He traveled to most of the United States and Canada, and other continents including Europe, South America and Asia in ministry.
