Dr. E. Burl Randolph died on January 27, 2018 at his residence in Bridgeport, WV. On April 16th, he would have turned 98.

Dr. Randolph was born in 1920 in Lost Creek, WV, the son of Dr. Russell B. Randolph and Maude Gay Vincent Randolph. After graduating from Lost Creek High School and West Virginia University, he attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, where he met and married Mary Frances Kirk, a nursing student and the love of his life.

Upon graduation from medical school and the completion of post-graduate training, he and Mary settled in Clarksburg, WV, where he entered in the practice of urology with Dr. John F. McCuskey. He continued training under Dr. McCuskey’s guidance as well as at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine and at the University of London (England) Institute of Urology and the Hospital of St. Peter and St. Paul. He practiced urology in the Clarksburg area for thirty-five years, retiring in 1981.

Dr. Randolph was a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve during World War II and saw active duty aboard the ammunition ship, U.S.S. Great Sitkin. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and was assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Randolph held professional memberships in county, state, and national medical and urological organizations. He was certified by the American Board of Urology and was a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and Surgeons. He held staff appointments at several regional hospitals, serving, at one point, as President of the United Hospital Center Medical Staff.

Giving back to the community was very important to Dr. Randolph. He served on the boards of many community organizations, including, among others, the Harrison County Board of Education, Board of Trustees of Salem College, Board of Directors of the Harrison County Bank and the Executive Board of First United Methodist Church. In addition, he assisted several deserving young men and women by anonymously contributing to the cost of their college educations.

Active in Masonry for many years, Dr. Randolph was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason, became a member of the Scottish Rite and served as Venerable Master of Lodge of Perfection. Later he was invested with the rank and decoration of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor and was coroneted an Inspector General Honorary 33rd Degree. He served as Potentate of the Nemesis Temple and was elected President of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Association, which encompassed 22 Shrine Temples in seven states and the District of Columbia.

His involvement with the Shrine was perhaps the activity that brought him the most satisfaction. He served on the Board of Governors of the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Lexington, KY, and on the Board of the Morgantown Childhood Language Center in Morgantown, WV, which was at one time supported by the Scottish Rite.

After sixty-six years of marriage, Dr. Randolph was preceded in death by his wife, Mary. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela L. Randolph.

He is survived by five children: Cynthia R. Owens (David) of York, PA; Edward B. Randolph Jr. (Elena) of Charlotte, NC; Barbara R. Rodriguez (Jorge) of Davidson, NC; Rebecca R. Abbate (Gary) of Bridgeport, WV; and David K. Randolph (Danette) of St. Louis, MO.

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Andrew D. Owens (Nootan Bharani) of Chicago, IL; Ryan C. Owens (Marisa) of York, PA; Erin E. Owens (Mark Kirby) of Westport, CT; Sarah A. Trupo (Michael) of Baltimore, MD; Cassandra L. Abbate of Tampa, FL; Alejandra Rodriguez of Oakland, CA; Ana Rodriguez of Burlington, VT; Maren Rodriguez of Davidson, NC; Kirk D. Randolph of St. Louis, MO; and Dean E. Randolph of St. Louis, MO.

He is survived by six great-grandchildren as well: Nikolis and Kristopher Owens of York, PA; Neem and June Owens of Chicago, IL; and Owen and Quinn Kirby of Westport, CT.

The immediate family will gather for a private interment coordinated by Amos Carvelli Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life is being planned for friends and family to be held at a later date.
