Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the conclusion of the visitation at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Clifford Schell presiding.   Interment will follow in the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery where Full Military Graveside Rites will be accorded.

James Edward “Tom” Vernon, 77, of Clarksburg, passed away on May 8, 2016 at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center following an extended illness.

 

He was born in Clarksburg on February 19, 1939, a son of the late Paul E. Vernon and Macil McClung Daugneaux.

 

On September 24, 1960, he married Helen Jean Latz Vernon, who resides at their home in Clarksburg.

 

In addition to his wife Mr. Vernon is survived by two sons, Darrin E. Vernon of Stonewood and Brian L. Vernon and his wife Karrell of Good Hope; two grandsons, Nicholas E. Vernon and Blake A. Vernon; and one great grandson Braxton Lane- Vernon. Also surviving are one sister, Cherie Souder and her husband JR of West Milford; one brother, Ronnie Barbee and his wife Harriet of Cross, SC; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Seti and her husband Dominick and Margaret Paugh; one brother-in-law, Joe Latz and his wife Jeanie; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also left behind are his dogs, Buffy and Baby.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Helen Popovich, father-in-law, George Popovich and brother-in-law, George Popovich, Jr.

 

Tom spent 27 years at Thorofare Markets, and retired from Bombardier in 2001. He served our country as a veteran in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

 

He was a member of Broad Oaks United Methodist Church, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Tom loved boating, fishing, hunting and enjoyed the beach with his family.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 5074 Elk River Road N, Elkview, WV 25071.
