Pastor Jimmie Joe “J.J.” Johnson, 86, of West Milford, passed away on June 20, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Weston, WV on October 4, 1939, the son of the late Harry G. and Opal A. Ables Johnson.

He married Melba Catherine Bell Johnson on January 21, 1961. She preceded him in death on October 4, 2023.

Surviving Pastor Johnson are two daughters, Michele Lamb and husband Grady of Salem, and Rebecca Ann Deem and husband Duane of Sycamore Rd.; three grandchildren, Drew and Cody McIntyre and Dakota Deem; and one sister, Mary Gay of Weston.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Johnson; and one brother-in-law, Don Gay.

J.J. attended Lewis County High School and went on to serve as a National Guardsman. He graduated from Duke University with his degree in Seminary.

Following graduation, J.J. earned his title as Pastor with the United Methodist Church. During his 36 years with the conference, Pastor Johnson served Newton, Hinton, Elk Garden, Jarvisville Charge, Fairview Charge, and the Davis Charge, from where he retired in June of 2002.

J.J. never met a stranger. No matter where he was, he would strike up a conversation. He was always quick to shake the hand of Service Personnel and thank them for their service to our country, and he was a huge patriot and loved his country.

He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed deer, bear, and coon hunting. Whether the hunt was successful or not, he enjoyed his time with God’s creation.

No matter where he lived, part of J.J’s routine was to have coffee and talk with his buddies. He was always making new friends and considered this a part of his ministry. He also loved telling preacher jokes and would be the one to laugh the loudest at them.

Jimmie loved God first and his family second. He was always sure to let his girls know how proud he was of them.
