I loved going through that intersection and seeing Mr. Hardman. In this rat-race we call life it was a daily reminder for a few seconds that we all really do have much more in common than we have differences. Smiling, waving and honking their horns. He made my day and I'm sure he made a lot of other folk's day as well. Rest in Peace and Thank You for your service both in the military and in retirement.

My daughter just asked last week where he had been. His shining light will be sorely missed by those who knew him and those who simply drove by and were touched by his light.

I always enjoyed seeing Charlie and giving him a honk and a salute. I could see the joy he brought to people as they waved, hollered, and honked. He really became a fantastic ambassador for Clarksburg by welcoming people to our city. His joy-inducing presence will be missed, and he will not be quickly forgotten. I really hope the city will find some way to memorialize Charlie on that corner and continue to bring joy and memories of him for years to come.

I met Mr. Hardman last fall when I transported him to the airport in Bridgeport so he could participate in Honor Flight. It was an honor to be in his presence. We talked all the way to the airport which blessed my life. I asked him “why do you sit on the corner of Pike St. and Chestnut St. and wave to everyone”? The answer was quick, deliberate, and caring. “ I do it because everybody works hard all day and they probably feel stressed out, tired, and spent. I thought perhaps that would cheer them up and they would be happy and wave back at me and blow their horns.” That made me feel good to maybe improve their situation or make them happy and smile.” As I departed the airport, he said “Don’t forget to pick me up this evening and DON’T LOSE MY WHEELCHAIR.” I assured him I would not and there would be many more there at the airport to welcome him home. Mr. Hardman IS a REAL American Hero and my life was enriched to have met him. God’s speed to you Mr. Hardman. You will be sorely missed but you have blessed us all. Thank you so very much Alan Cleland

I met Charles at the beginning of last summer. I stopped when he was at his corner because every time I would drive by with my dogs, he would always wave and say “Hi puppies!” So I stopped and let him pet my dogs. We had talked about the option of a service dog, but I did not have what he wanted. He was very sweet and was an icon for Clarksburg. He will be greatly missed.
