Obituaries

Joanna Hibbs Griffin, 96, of Clarksburg, formerly of Philippi, WV, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

She was born in Charleston, WV on September 6, 1927, a daughter of the late Reverend Ward and Mary Lough Hibbs.

Surviving are one son, Jonathan Ward Griffin and his wife, Karen of Clarksburg; and one daughter, Mary Joanna Sandy and her husband Dexter of Carmel, IN; four grandchildren, Jonathan Ward Griffin, II and his wife Jessica, Jordan David Griffin and his wife Caroline, Meghan Lough Sandy and Brandon Charles Sandy; three great grandchildren, Jasiah Ward Griffin, Doss David Christopher Griffin and Banks Macallister Smith Griffin.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having also been preceded in death by one brother, William Hibbs and sister, Mary Ellen Hibbs.

Ms. Griffin was a graduate of Potomac State College and West Virginia University. She was a retired music teacher with the Barbour County Board of Education. She was a music enthusiast and a passionate music educator. She was a choir director and loved playing the piano.  She was an avid sports fan and loved watching her grandchildren play sports. She was Christian by faith and grew up in the American Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Philippi Baptist Church.

Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Friday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, where funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 11:00 am.  Interment will be in the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, 1290 Fairmont Rd, Morgantown, WV 26501.
