Susan Lee Phillips Garvin, 91, our beautiful Nanny, passed away in the loving presence of family on Friday, July 26, 2024. She was a woman of kindness, strength, and a fantastic dancer.
Susan Lee Garvin (née Phillips) was born in Syracuse, New York on May 27, 1933. She moved to West Virginia at a young age and always considered Clarksburg to be her home. She loved to share stories from her youth of the days she spent performing on roller skates and appearing as a magician’s assistant – but she never let any magic secrets slip.
As the eldest daughter, Sue helped raise her four younger siblings. She married and had six children. She attended nursing school and served for many years at Weston State Hospital and with Rescare Health Services. No doubt, hundreds of lives are better for having had her as their nurse.
Susan is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Dortha, and grandmother, Mamie, as well as her four siblings, Bob, Dick, Joan, and Bud. She will also be welcomed home by her husband of many years, Jack, as well as four of her children, Michael, Steve, Mark, and Beth, along with countless beloved pets that she took into her home over the years.
Sue is survived by many loved ones: her daughters Cindy Garvin of Clarksburg and Tammy Pasternak, and husband Dr. Ed Pasternak of Washington, daughter-in-law Diane Garvin of Clarksburg, grandchildren Christopher, Neil (Rhonda), Gabe (Marci), Brooke, Casey, Adam (Megan), Jonna, Anna (Trent), Laura (Josh), and Liz (Terry), great-grandchildren Christian, Caitlin, Gavin, Kendra, Cole, Danika, Zander, Jaxson, Liam, Avery, Gabriel, Messiah, Xavier, Isla, Gaia, Brady, Rowan, Lila, Charlotte, and Baby C, and great-great-grandchildren Elijah and Alaia.
Nanny is loved beyond measure, and always will be. Though we miss her here, we know so many have lovingly welcomed her home. We will carry her legacy of love and serving others with us, always.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations made in Sue’s memory to the Humane Society of Harrison County, 2450 Saltwell Road, Shinnston, WV, 26431.
The family would like to extend deep gratitude to the Amedisys Hospice Team.
