Obituaries

Wakem Simon, age 94 of Clarksburg, passed peacefully into eternal life, at his home, surrounded by his family, on Monday, January 30, 2017.   He was born October 5, 1922 in Clarksburg, the son of the late Elias and Nellie (Wakem) Simon.   His wife of 49 years, Mary Tricot Simon, preceded him in death on January 11, 1997.

He is survived by four children, Flora Ann “Flory”Simon of Tucson, Arizona, E. Wakem and Diana Simon, Jim and Patti Simon of Clarksburg, Judy and Mark Bonamico of Bridgeport, and ten grandchildren, Joshua and Valerie Paugh, Jacob and Jodi Paugh, Sergio Bonamico, Carisa and Jamus Morrison,  Bridget and John Waltz, Mark Anthony Bonamico, Victoria Simon,  Wakem C. Simon,  James Simon;   six great grandchildren,  Baileigh & Joseph Paugh,  Zachary & Abby  Paugh, Aubrey & Abraham Morrison;  numerous nieces, nephews, great & great great nieces and nephews.   Also surviving are two brothers, Abraham Simon of Havertown, Pa., Thomas and Gerry Simon, Bridgeport; two sisters, Catherine Simon Courey, Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Clarksburg, and M. Jean Simon and Donald Dupont, Clarksburg.   In addition to his parents and wife, preceding him in death were two brothers, Simon Simon and George Simon, a son-in-law, Lou Palumbo, a granddaughter, Lavenda Narcisco Paugh and a nephew, David A. Simon.

Wakem was a graduate of Victory High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II.  Following military duty, he was employed as a supervisor at Southern Steel Products Co.  After his retirement, he remained active for several years as general manager of the Summit Park Water Board.  Well into his eighties and early nineties, he found another way to stay active and useful as a barista at his son’s Almost Heaven Desserts & Coffee Shop.   He thoroughly enjoyed sharing the friendship and comradery of his early morning patrons. Equally enjoyable, over many years, were the weekly Monday evening dinners at his home with family and friends. All were warmly welcomed.  His family and faith were the all- important in his life.   He enjoyed sports, especially football having been on the football team during his school years.   Like his brothers, Wakem loved woodworking and created many beautiful wood products for family and friends. He was a generous and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was a faithful and active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for over seventy years, where he served as an usher, minister of communion, at the altar for funeral Masses and in many other areas of the parish.   He served many hours supervising past building projects in the parish, including the construction of the new rectory.

Family and friends may call at Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, WV on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm where a Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Church with Father Casey Mahone and Father Richard Metzgar as con-celebrants.  Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Mausoleum.
