Full military honors will be accorded. A memorial service to celebrate Johnny’s life will be held at a later date. Details will be announced by the family.

Charles Duncan “Johnny” Johnston III, 79, of Currey Farms near Salem, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026.

Born on July 3, 1946, Johnny was the son of the late Charles D. Johnston Jr. and Martha Southern Johnston.

Johnny is survived by his sisters, Joan Johnston Hart and Barbara Johnston Swisher, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

A 1964 graduate of Washington Irving High School, Johnny continued his education at Gordon Military Academy in Georgia and Fairmont State University. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, spending three years aboard the USS Ranger aircraft carrier.

Following the death of his father, Johnny assumed leadership of the Samson Company, serving as its president with dedication and integrity. His business responsibilities never diminished his love for adventure, and he traveled extensively throughout the world, embracing new experiences and cultures.

A man of many talents and interests, Johnny was a certified scuba diver and a gifted musician who taught himself to play numerous stringed instruments. Music was a lifelong passion, and he enjoyed performing as a member of a bluegrass band. He also took great pleasure in collecting musical instruments, stamps, coins, antiques, and war memorabilia.

Johnny found his greatest happiness outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, skiing, horseback riding, and golf. Family and friends fondly remember visits to his farm, where they enjoyed riding horses, spending time in nature, and exploring the beautiful countryside. His beloved dogs were constant companions and brought him immense joy throughout his life.

He was an active member of several organizations and was proud of his community involvement. Johnny was a member of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, the Clarksburg Elks Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a longtime member of the Clarksburg Country Club. He was also a devoted supporter of West Virginia University athletics and enjoyed following Mountaineer football.

Johnny will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, generous heart, keen intellect, and unwavering loyalty to family and friends. Whether sharing stories, playing music, traveling, or simply enjoying the beauty of his farm, he lived life fully and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Johnny’s memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to those who provided care, comfort, and friendship to Johnny throughout his life. His memory will be treasured always.
