Family and friends may call at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 126 E. Pike Street, Clarksburg on Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am with Monsignor Paul Hudock as Celebrant.  Interment will be in the Enterprise I.O.O.F. Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Clarksburg Mustard Seed 444 E. Pike Street, Clarksburg, WV 26301.

Joan “Giovannina” Smith passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025 at United Hospital Center.

She was born October 1, 1931, the daughter of the late Amelio Meale and Rosa (Dabruzzia) Meale. She was one of eight children born on Pennsylvania Avenue in Fairmont.

She was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Clarksburg, WV. Joan’s vibrant spirit was felt by her family, friends, and strangers alike. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Italian cuisine was her specialty as her parents were immigrants from Italy. Joan enjoyed watching sports, especially the WV Mountaineers, and also Tiger Woods. Joan had a competitive edge herself. She was hard to beat at Scrabble and enjoyed bingo as well. Joan cherished her family and friends. Everyone enjoyed her sense of humor and her blatant honesty. Joan’s boundless energy and nurturing soul will forever be etched in our hearts, and her legacy lives on in her laughter, love and memories she created.

Joan, a widow, was married to Frank “Lefty” Smith, Jr. In addition to her parents Joan was preceded in death by her siblings, Filomena (Minnie) Amodea, Felix (Fitch) Meale, Josephine (Peen) Tristani, Marian Sapp, Stella Hawkinberry, Atelio (Ott) Meale and Eugene Meale.

Joan is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary Smith and Rebecca Smith of New Braunfels, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Malfregeot and Jim Malfregeot of Clarksburg, WV; her grandchildren Jon Smith, James Malfregeot, and Julian Malfregeot; great grandchildren, Alexandria Smith and Summer Malfregeot. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
