Lindy Lewis Bennett, 78, of Mt. Clare, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, June 7, 2024, at his residence, following an extended battle with cancer.

Lindy was born on March 11, 1946, in Harrison County, WV, a son of the late James Peter and Esta Ellen Helmick Bennett.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Kay Bennett, who passed on August 9, 2022. They were wed on June 8, 1968.

Lindy is survived by his children, Darren Bennett, his wife Vanessa, and their children of Elkins, and Lori Andrews, her husband Kevin, and their children of Blacksburg; two sisters, Evelina Ashcraft of Mt. Clare and Dorothy Drake of Morgantown; several nieces and nephews, and his beloved cat, Marshmallow.

Lindy was a graduate of Washington-Irving High School, Class of 1965. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree specializing in Industrial Arts and Physical Education from Fairmont State College in 1968. He went on to achieve his Master’s from West Virginia University in 1972 in Secondary School Administration. He held his first position as principal with Roosevelt-Wilson High School from 1973-1985.

Mr. Bennett was the principal of Bridgeport High School from 1985-2006. Retirement from his position as principal kept him busier than ever as he became the Administrative Assistant for Harrison County Schools in 2006 and the Assistant Superintendent of Harrison County Schools in 2008. He officially retired in June 2011, with a total of 43 years of service.

He was inducted into the Bridgeport High School Alumni and Friends Foundation Hall of Fame in 2013, where his picture is displayed on the wall alongside others who impacted the lives and educations of countless students. He believed his success in the education industry came from fulfilling his commitment to his students by providing the best possible education opportunities, regardless of their abilities or station in life. He held the teaching staff in the highest regard and made sure to provide them with academic freedom to excel in their subject areas.

When Mr. Bennett was not working with students and staff, he found joy in helping his friends and neighbors with whatever tasks may need done. He loved to visit the woods and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed gardening and volunteering at the Lake Floyd golf course where he took pride in maintaining the course and playing golf.

Lindy was an active member of the Quiet Dell United Methodist Church where he also attained Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop #16.

He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and community.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Bennett’s family request donations be made in his memory to the Bridgeport Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, Bridgeport High School, 515 Johnson Avenue, Bridgeport, WV, 26330 or to the Quiet Dell United Methodist Church, 96 Trinity Road, Mt Clare, WV, 26408.
