Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Michael Burge officiating.  Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Martha E. Gouer, age 91, of Clarksburg, passed away on July 14, 2018, at her residence with her loving family by her side.  

 

She was born on January 3, 1927 in Belington, Barbour County, the second child of the late Thurman and Myrtle Hewitt Poe.

 

She was preceded in death on April 7, 2016, by her husband of 64 years, Charles E Gouer, whom she married on April 11, 1951. 

 

Surviving are her beloved children, daughter Sharon E. Patterson of Clarksburg, William E. “Bill” Gouer and wife, Teresa of Clarksburg and Mark E. Gouer and wife Cheri of Eustis,  Florida.  She was a loving grandmother of four grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn (Callan) Tompkins and fiancé Joey of St. Leonard, MD, Bryan Andrew Lepley and wife Sara of Augusta, GA, Dawna “Richelle” Squires of Kissimmee FL, and Sara Bethany Snodgrass and husband Matthew of Clarksburg.  Her great-grandchildren who love and miss her dearly are Alessandra Nina-Nicole DeLuca, Charles “Charlie” Padrig Callan, Grace Ann Lepley, Ezra William Squires and Isabelle Wren Snodgrass. 

 

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. 

 

Mrs. Gouer was a 1944 graduate of Belington High School and earned her BS degree in nursing from Alderson Broaddus College in Philippi.  She worked as a registered nurse at Myers Clinic, Eastern State Hospital, Williamsburg, VA and Union Protestant Hospital until her retirement in 1968. She was coordinator of the LPN course at United Technical Center until her retirement in 1990. 

She was a former member of Centennial Squares Square Dancers, WV Nurses Association, and American Nurses Association. Mrs. Gouer, better known as “Nanny” appreciated the simple things in life; gardening, reading stories to her grandchildren and bird watching from her porch.  She will always be remembered by her grandchildren for her meatballs, pumpkin rolls, peas and sweet tea.
